SASSI History
Parents supporting parents

SASSI - Solihull Autistic Spectrum Support and Information - was set up at end of 2007. Meetings were held in Shirley and Chelmsley Wood to find out what parents/carers wanted from a support group. Results from a questionnaire showed they were asking for monthly meetings  in the evening with speakers on different aspects of autism, and a chance to meet other parents. A small group of parents met to form a committee. It meets every month to plan meetings and to support each other.

Thanks to the hard work of some parents, such as Patrick Lambert who did Three Peaks Challenge and Trafalgar Square to Mell Square Bike Ride, we were able to raise enough money to become a registered charity. Funds go to pay for speakers and room hire and public liability insurance.

Our Talks have been varied but some topics are always asked for such as anxiety, behaviour, girls and autism, sensory difficulties, transition and education. The experiences of young people with autism such as John Simpson and Nick Hall are always popular.

The Committee is made up of parents of children with autism who understand how important it is for parents not to feel alone and to have access to information and advice.
